The hip joint, one of the weight-bearing joints of the body, is a ball-and-socket joint located between the thigh bone (femur) and the pelvis (acetabulum). The joint surfaces are covered by articular cartilage that acts as a cushion. When this cartilage is damaged, it can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure to replace damaged cartilage and bone with artificial components. It is an option for severe arthritis pain that limits daily activities. The three most common types of arthritis that affect the hip are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical examination, and X-rays.
