Unicompartimental Knee Replacement

Unicompartmental knee replacement is used to treat arthritis that affects only one compartment of the knee (inner, outer, or patellar). During surgery, only the damaged part of the knee is removed and replaced with a prosthesis.

The knee has three compartments: patellofemoral, medial, and lateral. Total knee replacement, a common treatment for severe osteoarthritis, involves replacing all damaged surfaces of the knee joint with artificial parts. Partial knee replacement (also called unicompartmental knee replacement) is a minimally invasive surgery in which only the damaged compartment of the knee is replaced with an implant.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of knee arthritis, where the articular cartilage wears out, causing the bones to rub against each other. Symptoms may include knee pain, stiffness, swelling, and limited range of motion. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical examination, and X-rays.
