Shoulder Joint Replacement

This term can refer to different types of shoulder replacements, such as total shoulder replacement, hemiarthroplasty replacement (only the head of the humerus is replaced), or reverse shoulder replacement. The choice of procedure will depend on the type of injury or disease affecting the joint.

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint where the humerus (upper arm bone) and the scapula (shoulder blade) meet. The joint surfaces are covered with cartilage, which, when damaged, can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness (osteoarthritis). Total shoulder replacement surgery is performed to relieve these symptoms by replacing the damaged parts of the joint with artificial prostheses.

This surgery is recommended for conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis when other treatments like medications, injections, and physical therapy are not effective. Diagnosis involves a review of medical history, a physical examination to assess mobility and pain, and imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs.
