Outpatient hip replacement, or same-day hip replacement, is a surgical procedure in which the patient is discharged within the first 24 hours to recover at home. This is possible thanks to minimally invasive techniques, modern pain relief, and improved anesthesia and rehabilitation protocols.

Indications

This procedure is typically for healthy patients without major health conditions, who have a strong support system at home, are motivated for physical therapy, and do not smoke.

Preparation

Preparation includes a complete medical evaluation, preparing the home environment for recovery (e.g., removing tripping hazards), arranging assistance, and abstaining from food or drink before surgery.

Surgical Procedure

The procedure is performed with regional anesthesia and sedation. The surgeon makes an incision (6 to 8 inches long), removes the damaged parts of the joint, and inserts artificial components (a metal socket with a plastic lining and a metal or ceramic stem with a ball). The components are secured, and the incision is closed.
