Open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fracture

Elbow fractures in children usually occur from falls on an outstretched hand. Treatment may vary depending on the child's age and the type of fracture, but often involves a splint or cast.

The arm bone is the humerus. Mid-humeral fractures are breaks in the middle of this bone, between the shoulder and elbow joints. They are classified as Type A (simple fracture), Type B (the broken bone forms a wedge), or Type C (broken into many pieces). Causes include a direct blow or bending force, falling on an outstretched arm, or violent muscle contraction.

Symptoms are considerable pain, swelling, and an apparent shortening of the arm with significant bone displacement. Diagnosis is made through X-ray and ultrasound imaging. Most mid-humeral fractures can be treated without surgery with a hanging arm cast, a coaptation splint, or a functional brace.
