Indications

An ACL injury can cause pain and make the knee feel like it's "giving out." While non-operative treatments like bracing or physical therapy are options, they have a high rate of repeat injury. Surgery is recommended for moderate to severe ACL tears to prevent further pain, instability, and damage to other knee structures like the meniscus. An Achilles tendon allograft is a good option for those who wish to return to athletic activity.

Surgical Procedure

The surgery is usually performed arthroscopically through a few small incisions. An arthroscope is inserted into one incision, and the magnified images are displayed on a monitor to guide the surgeon. The torn ligament is removed and replaced with the Achilles allograft.
