Causes, Symptoms & Diagnosis
The causes, symptoms, and diagnostic procedures are identical to those described in File 1, including the common sports-related injuries, the "loud pop" and buckling sensation, swelling, and the use of X-rays, MRI, arthroscopy, and the Lachman's and Pivot shift tests.
Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The goal is to restore stability to the knee. The surgeon makes two small cuts, about a quarter-inch long, around the knee. An arthroscope is inserted to see inside the joint, and a sterile solution is used to expand the knee for a clear view. The torn ACL is removed, and the new ACL is created from a portion of the patellar tendon, including its attachments to the kneecap and shin bone.
