Use of the quadriceps tendon as a graft to rebuild ligaments.

Reconstruction with Quadriceps Tendon

The quadriceps tendon is a strong tendon that connects the quadriceps muscles to the kneecap. This tendon can be used as a graft to reconstruct other ligaments in the knee, such as the ACL.

Anatomy & Indications

The ACL is a strong, rope-like structure in the center of the knee that helps stabilize the joint. A torn ACL does not heal on its own and often causes instability, requiring reconstruction. An ACL tear is the main indication for this type of reconstruction. Causes of injury are the same as in previous files.

Preparation & Procedure

Pre-operative preparation includes a physical exam, blood work, and imaging. Patients should inform their doctor of any allergies and stop taking blood thinners. They should also refrain from eating or drinking for at least 8 hours before surgery. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia using a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique. The surgeon makes two small cuts, inserts an arthroscope to view the joint, and removes the torn ACL. An incision is made over the quadriceps tendon to harvest the graft, which is then used to replace the ACL.
