A high tibial osteotomy is a surgical procedure to relieve pressure on a damaged, arthritic knee joint. In this procedure, a wedge of bone is cut at the upper end of the tibia (shin bone). The bone is either removed or a bone graft is used to fill the gap, depending on the patient's specific needs. This surgery is often recommended for patients under 55 with arthritis on only one side of the knee who have not found relief from non-surgical treatments.
