The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint and is the largest weight-bearing joint in the human body. The hip joint is formed by the head of the thigh bone (femur) and the acetabulum of the pelvis. It is composed of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. Various conditions can cause the joint to become painful and inflamed.

Hip joint injections are used to diagnose the source of pain and relieve discomfort. The injection consists of a mixture of an anesthetic, which blocks pain, and a steroid, which reduces inflammation.
