The pelvis is formed by two hip bones fused on each side of the sacrum (the last section of the spine). Each hip bone is composed of three fused bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis. The sacroiliac (SI) joints are the two joints in the lower back where the sacrum and ilium join. These joints can become painful and inflamed due to various conditions.

A sacroiliac joint injection is a conservative treatment to relieve these symptoms. The injection is a mixture of an anesthetic, which blocks pain, and a steroid, which reduces inflammation.
