A spinal fracture is a break in the vertebral bones that form the spine. The spine extends from the neck to the lower back and consists of 33 vertebrae and cushioning discs. A spinal fracture can cause damage to the vertebrae, discs, ligaments, or spinal cord. Causes often include motor vehicle accidents, falls, high-impact sports, and osteoporosis. Signs and symptoms include pressure, stiffness, and pain in the spinal area, tingling or numbness in the limbs, difficulty walking, and loss of bladder or bowel control.

Spinal fractures can be classified into different types:

• Compression fracture: The front part of a vertebra fractures and loses height; common in patients with osteoporosis.

• Axial burst fracture: A vertebra loses height in both the front and back parts, often due to a fall from a significant height.

• Chance fracture: The vertebra splits apart, often caused by a car accident where the upper body is pulled forward by a seatbelt.

• Fracture-dislocation: The bone is broken and ligaments are torn, dislocating the vertebra.
