The lower leg has two long bones: the tibia (shin bone) and the fibula. The tibia is the larger of the two and bears most of the body's weight, forming the knee and ankle joints. A crack or break in the tibia is called a tibial fracture. Tibial shaft fractures occur in the middle of the bone, while plateau fractures are at the top, near the knee joint. This type of fracture can result from falls, sports injuries, or car accidents. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, deformity, and an inability to bear weight.
