A wrist fracture is a break in one or more of the bones that form the wrist, which includes the radius, ulna, and the 8 carpal bones. There are different types of fractures: simple fractures have well-aligned bone pieces, unstable fractures have misaligned pieces, and open fractures are severe breaks where bones cut through the skin.
Open fractures are more prone to infection and require immediate medical attention. Causes include falls on an outstretched arm, vehicle accidents, or workplace injuries. Certain sports and conditions such as osteoporosis can also increase the risk. Common symptoms are severe pain, swelling, and limited hand movement.
