The humerus is the arm bone. A proximal humerus fracture, the region closest to the shoulder joint, can affect your work and daily activities. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a surgical technique used for severe proximal humerus fractures to restore normal anatomy and improve movement.

The shoulder is formed by three bones: the clavicle, scapula (shoulder blade), and humerus. Elderly people are more prone to these fractures from accidents such as falling on an outstretched arm, while younger people may suffer them from high-energy accidents. Most proximal humerus fractures are non-displaced and can be treated with a support sling and rehabilitation. However, if the fracture fragments are more than 5 millimeters apart or the angle is greater than 45 degrees, surgery may be required.
