A pediatric supracondylar fracture is a break in the lower end of the humerus, just above the elbow joint, in children. These are one of the most common types of elbow fractures in children, especially between the ages of 5 and 8 years. They often occur from a fall on an outstretched arm or a direct blow to the elbow.
Complications can include injury to blood vessels and nerves or improper healing. About 98% of these fractures are classified as extension type. They are further classified into types based on the displacement of the humerus fracture.
