Hip synovitis, or transient/toxic synovitis, is inflammation of the synovial tissues around the hip joint, causing pain. It is the most common reason for sudden hip pain in children aged 2 to 9 years and affects boys more than girls.
Symptoms and Causes
Symptoms appear within 1-3 days and include hip or groin pain, limping, difficulty walking, and sometimes mild fever or pain in the inner thigh or knee. The exact cause is unknown, but theories include recent trauma or a viral infection. Diagnosis is made through a physical examination, ultrasound, and blood tests. A joint fluid culture may be requested if inflammatory markers are high.
