Hip joint surface replacement, preserving bone.

Hip Resurfacing Surgery

Hip resurfacing surgery is an alternative to total hip replacement. In this procedure, only the surface of the joint is replaced, preserving a greater amount of bone. It is an option for younger and more active patients.

Hip Resurfacing

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint, where the femoral head (ball) of the thigh bone fits into the acetabulum (socket) of the pelvis. Hip resurfacing is a surgical procedure to treat damaged hip bones, in which the femoral head is trimmed and replaced, along with the socket, with metal caps. It is an alternative to total hip replacement surgery, where the entire ball and socket are removed and replaced with prosthetics.

Indications and Contraindications

Hip resurfacing is recommended for patients with severe hip arthritis who have not responded to conservative treatments such as medications, injections, and physical therapy. It is more suitable for younger patients, large-framed patients with strong, healthy bones. It is not recommended for patients with metal hypersensitivity, osteoporosis, impaired kidney function, and large areas of dead bone (avascular osteonecrosis).

Surgical Procedure

The procedure is performed with spinal or general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the thigh bone to access the hip joint. The femoral head is trimmed and fitted with a metal cap, and the damaged socket is replaced with a metal cup. The femoral head is then placed back into the socket, and the incision is closed.

Advantages of Hip Resurfacing

  • Easier revision surgery, as it involves less bone removal.
  • Lower risk of hip dislocation due to the larger ball size.
  • More natural walking pattern and greater range of motion.

Disadvantages of Hip Resurfacing

  • There is a probability of femoral neck fracture.
