The hip is a ball-and-socket joint where the femoral head fits into the acetabulum of the pelvis. The joint surface is covered by articular cartilage, which acts as a cushion. When diseases or conditions damage this cartilage, total hip replacement may be necessary. This surgical procedure involves removing damaged cartilage and bone and replacing them with artificial components.

Total hip replacement is an option to relieve the pain of severe arthritis that limits daily activities. Arthritis is inflammation of the joints, and hip arthritis is a common cause of chronic hip pain and disability.
