Anserine Bursitis

Anserine bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa found on the inside of the knee, near the tibia. It causes pain and tenderness in that area, and is often related to activities that involve repetitive knee motion.

Bursitis is the inflammation and swelling of a bursa, which is a small, fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between bones and soft tissues. Pes anserine bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa located on the inner side of the knee, between the hamstring tendons and the shin bone (tibia). It occurs when the bursa becomes inflamed, produces too much fluid, and swells, putting pressure on the adjacent parts of the knee. The most common symptoms are pain and tenderness on the inner side of the knee.

Causes and Symptoms

This condition mainly results from overuse or constant stress and friction on the bursa. It is often seen in athletes, particularly runners. Other contributing factors can include tight hamstring muscles, improper training, knee osteoarthritis, medial meniscus rupture, obesity, and sports that require repetitive side-to-side movements. Common symptoms are swelling, pain, tenderness, warmth, redness, and a restricted range of knee motion.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by reviewing medical history and performing a physical examination. Fluid from the bursa may be removed for lab analysis, and imaging studies like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be used to rule out other issues. Treatment methods include modifying activities to avoid triggering symptoms.
